HEALTH & FITNESS PROGRAMS

BLOOD PRESSURE/DIABETIC SCREENINGS:   Blood Pressure Clinics (9:00 -11:00 a.m.):    August 25th at Enrichment Center.  Tuesday, September 7th at Enrichment Center;  Monday, September 13th at J.F. Sullivan Housing;  Tuesday, September 21st at College Highway Apartments;  Tuesday, September 28th at Cliffview Manor.  DIABETIC CLINICS (9:00 - 11:00 a.m.) Tuesday, September 7th at Enrichment Center;  Tuesday, September 21st at College Highway Apartments.

FOOTCARE: Footcare is held at the Enrichment Center monthly by appointment. The cost is $28.00 and is not reimbursable through Medicare. Payment is due at the time of your appointment. If you have diabetes or circulation problems, the nurse will not be able to see you. EXERCISE CLASSES:

Osteoporosis Exercise Class: Classes meets on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. for one hour. A suggested $3.00 donation is requested. Registration and medical forms are required and are available at the Enrichment Center.

WII FIT DEMONSTRATION:  Here is a great way to exercise indoors.  Our Wii Queen, Barbara Wagner will give us a working demonstration of the Wii Fit Program using our big screen TV.  Wii Fit utilizes a sensory pad on the floor and your movement shows up on the screen.  It is fun!  You can exercise at your level of comfort and in your own home,  But we think it would be fun to hold a class here.  Space is limited.  So call the Enrichment Center and add your name to the "interest list".  SEPTEMBER UPDATE:  Join us for an all new Sports Program.  Wii is an interactive computer-based method of exercise.  Barbara Wagner, our Wii Queen has lots of experience working with people who "used to do" activites.  She helps them find a way to enjoy them again at theor own pace.  Imagine being able to bowl, ski, play basketball or golf again.  This is a great program andyou can request one-on-one private instruction by appointment.  Offered at no charge on Thursdays at 10 a.m.  Call to let us know you are coming and have fun.

HEARING SCREENINGS: Hearing Screenings are held 1x/month with Jeanne Armour, a certified Occupational Hearing Conservationist.

MASSAGE THERAPY: The Enrichment Center maintains a list of massage therapists who offer a senior discount and who also make home visits by appointment.

FITNESS CENTER: The Fitness Center offers Easthampton residents 55 years of age and older the opportunity to workout on the following commercial grade equipment: 2 treadmills, elliptical cross trainer and duel action elliptical cross trainer, semi-recumbent cycle, duel action bike, windjammer (upper body) and Nustep (both upper and lower body workout). Registration and medical clearance forms are required in order to join the Fitness Center. Forms are available at the Senior center and there is a $35.00 per year membership fee.  As of January 1, 2011, the membershire fee for the Enrichment Center Fitness Center will be increased to $50.00 for Easthampton members and $65.00 for present out-of-town members.  This increase is necessary due to over $10,000 in overall improvements and purchases made to the Fitness Center over the past year.

ZUMBA IS HERE AT THE ENRICHMENT CENTER.  What is the world is ZUMBA?  It is the hottest new exercise routine for all ages.  Over 35 people signed up for the last 8-week session.  We are the first COA around here to offer it to you!   Next session is scheduled to begin September 3rd at 4:00 p.m.  Call Kim Jensen, Activity Coordinator at 527-6151 for further details. 

 SEEKING ACTIVE ADULTS:   Next meeting:  Friday,  September 10th at 2:00 p.m.  The Enrichment Center has organizing a group of like-minded, "Active Adults" who are interested in hiking the local area (3-5 mile hikes), snowshoeing, skiing, rafting, canoeing, dog sledding, and more.  Do you have what it takes?  If you are interested in learning more about this exciting new activity, please attend our informational meeting.  If you are interested and cannot attend the meeting, please call the Enrichment Center at 527-6151 and add your name to the "interest list". 

ACTIVE ADULTS MT. TOM HIKE:  Friday, September 24th at 10:00 a.m.  Enjoy a hike on the Beau Bridges Trail to Goat's Peak.  No more than a 2 mile up and down hike.  You must be in good physical condition and be able to keep pace with the group in order to participate.  Please bring your own lunch, snacks and water.  Limited to 8 participants.  Please call 527-6151 to pre-register by Friday, September 17th.  Van Fee:  $4.00.  Please notify us in advance if you plan to drive yourself of take the van.

NEW MONTHLY HEALTH LECTURE SERIES:  "HOW'S THE BODY?"

Safe Stretching Program:  Thursday, September 23rd at 10:30 a.m.  Cooley Dickinson Hospital is offering a free Safe Stretch Program, instructed by Joann Burns, a licensed physical therapist with over 34 years of experience.  Safe stretching is important, especially for senior citizens because it safely assists in warming up for more vigorous activity, helps prevent postural muscles from tightening, and may help decrease a risk of injury and muscle soreness from other daily activities or fitness activity.  Knowing safe stretching techniques is especially important for those who have had a joint replaced or has an arthritic joint.  Joann Berns will focus on parts of the body such as hips, knees, ankles, shoulders and also posture for the duration of the 45-minute program.  All who are interested in learning safe stretching techniques should attend.  Please call 527-6151 to pre-register.  Limited to 15 participants.

Heart Health:  Wednesday, September 29th at 10 a.m.  Kathleen Bowers, Manager of the Cardio-Vascular Unit at Cooley Dickinson Hospital will give a 45-minute lecture on heart-related issues.  Heart disease is the #1 killer of women in the U.S.  More women die each year for heart disease than from cancer.  Do you know the symptoms of a "heart attact"?  Did you know that symptoms for coronary problems are different in women?  Learn how the hear is affected by a lack of exercise, hormones or high blood pressure.  This free lecture is open to the public.  You must pre-register by calling 527-6151 by Friday, September 24th.  There will be time for general questions after the presentation.
